Mt. Apo

The Philippines is not all sun-drenched, palm-fringed beaches. Inland there are some serious mountains, the biggest of them all 2954 metre (9718 ft) Mt Apo , a massive jungle-clad volcano on the southern island of Mindanao . Centre of one of the country's largest national parks, protecting one of the most extensive surviving tracks of tropical rainforest, and refuge for the rare Philippine Eagle, one of the world's biggest raptors, Mt Apo holds a special place in the hearts of the Filipinos. This story covers a trek to the mountain's summit, visiting the Philippine Eagle captive breeding centre, taking in steaming hot springs , passing by volcanic lakes, and plunging through the mountain's dense forests. Finally onto the summit and spectacular views of the forest below. An energetic climb through some of the Philippines ' wildest scenery.
